So I had my very first trip to the Gold Coast being shown around and about with my daughter who lives there. It was a wonderful trip and enjoyed every minute but had a disappointing realisation that apparently it was funny to mock my accent. I survived the plane trip with wonderful staff and arrived into what I thought was a heatwave even though it was winter in the Gold Coast. I survived the airport and met my daughter who took my husband and other daughter and I to her place. The license plates on all the cars were different colours and styles to ours, I was told it was to depict which state you lived in. There were so many tall buildings and different scenery to take in, the trees were not too green and slightly blue I must say. We stayed in a beautiful apartment in Surfers Paradise and spent a wonderful time together. I was later surprised with my Son joining us from Sydney. My family was all together ready for lots of fun at the theme parks. One day we ventured out to Carrara Markets and enjoyed the day except for one moment when one of the stall owners decided to mock my accent when I wanted to know the price of a t-shirt that I thought would look nice on my neice back home. I have to say being my first time I was a little shocked. He was around 40 and wearing a cowboy hat and had a lovely clothing stall. His sign said 2 for 10 but the clothing I was looking at was a long way from the sign. I asked excuse me are these t-shirts two for ten? Holding them up and pointing to the sign. He decided this was his opportunity and instead of being helpful and selling two t-shirts he just kept repeating the words two for tin two for tin. I just walked away and he wouldn't stop laughing. Honestly what was the joke? Was it funny he had just lost a sale? It just really left me feeling that I didn't want to speak in public again for the whole time I was there. How unwelcoming that was for a stall owner. I understand there are rude people in my own country but I am not one of them. Have you experienced this when you have travelled from a shop keeper or someone who is in a position of supposedly giving customer service? Interested to hear your experiences too...
